AI can analyze your Google Ads account in minutes – but think twice before giving it the wheel

It has become tempting to let AI analyze and make changes to your Google Ads account, but it can turn into an expensive affair. You risk everything from suspended accounts to leaked business data and misleading key metrics. Learn more about the biggest and most critical risks of letting AI take over your advertising.

It has become easy – almost too easy. With AI tools like Claude, you can now connect to your Google Ads account and get a complete analysis of your campaigns in just a few minutes: wasted ad spend, bad keywords, incorrect bidding strategies. Some tools go a step further and let the AI make changes directly in the account – pausing campaigns, reallocating budgets, and adjusting bids.

The temptation is understandable. But before you give an AI free access to your Google Ads account, there are four risks you should know.

1. Your account can be suspended

For over a decade, Google has had rules against unauthorized automated activity. Automation is only permitted through Google’s official API using approved integrations. When an AI tool logs in instead and manages the account through the browser as if it were a human, it looks like a bot to Google’s security systems – and bots get flagged.

The industry has already seen how wrong it can go: At Meta, advertisers have had their entire ad portfolio permanently closed after AI agents with edit access optimized the accounts at machine speed. Google’s sanctions have so far been milder, typically involving reviews or suspensions rather than permanent closures, but the mechanism is the same: The systems evaluate behavior patterns, not good intentions.

2. Your business data leaves the building

Your Google Ads account contains sensitive business data: ad spend, customer acquisition costs, conversion data, and target audiences. When you run that data through an AI tool, you should know where it is being processed, what is being stored, and who can gain access. Nevertheless, countess guides are circulating showing how ‘anyone can audit any account with AI’ – without mentioning data security once. Our recommendation is clear: The use of AI on account data must always be agreed upon and transparent, whether internally or with a partner.

3. AI does not know your business

An AI analysis measures your account against general ‘best practices’. That sounds fine, but best practices are a starting point – not an answer key. The AI doesn’t know that your campaign structure looks ‘wrong’ because you tested fourteen other approaches, and this exact one works in your niche. It doesn’t know that your ‘too expensive’ clicks convert three times better than average.

We see it regularly in practice: AI analyses of ad accounts that sound convincing and are beautifully set up – but miss the mark because the AI lacks the context that only the team behind the account possesses. A nice report is not the same as a correct report.

4. AI optimizes for numbers – not for your bottom line

When an AI agent only sees Google Ads data, it optimizes in a closed loop: It chases the platform’s own metrics, which do not necessarily align with your actual earnings. In the worst-case scenario, the agent improves its own reported numbers while the business loses money. Additionally, language models are probabilistic – they predict, they do not execute rules like a script. The same prompt can produce different actions, and that is a problem when those actions happen live in an account with real money.

How to do it right

  • Use AI as an analyst, not as a pilot: Let it find opportunities, but let a human evaluate and execute the changes.
  • Choose only tools that connect via Google’s official API – not browser-based automation.
  • Clarify data security before sharing account data with an AI tool – and inform relevant parties.
  • Give the AI context about your business, and take all recommendations with a grain of salt until they have been verified by someone who knows the account.

Conclusion

AI is an excellent tool for finding opportunities in your Google Ads account – faster and cheaper than ever before. But it lacks the judgment to know which opportunities are worth pursuing, and the wrong technical setup can, in the worst case, cost you your account. Let the AI analyze. Let humans decide.
